The General Traffic Management Regulations (DGT) allow you to drive certain vehicles on Spanish roads even if you are under 18 years old, provided you have the appropriate license.
In addition to bicycles and electric scooters, some motorized vehicles can be driven from age 15, and more from age 16.
What can minors drive?
– From the age of 15, you can drive mopeds up to 49cc, both two- and three-wheeled, as well as quadricycles with gasoline engines of the same power, known as “cars without a license.”
– From the age of 16, motorcycles up to 125 cc with a maximum power of 11 kilowatts or 15 hp can be driven, as well as agricultural vehicles such as tractors, provided their maximum speed does not exceed 45 km/h.
What licenses are required?
Driving a moped up to 49cc requires an AM license, which includes a 20-question theory exam with a two-question margin of error and a practical exam on a closed circuit.
Driving a motorcycle up to 125cc requires an A1 license, with a theoretical exam that includes a real road situation similar to the automobile license exam. To drive a tractor, an agricultural license is required, which includes a theoretical and practical exam with maneuvers on a closed track.
Is it possible to pass the theoretical examination for a car license as a minor?
The DGT allows you to take the theory test for a driver’s license 3 months before you turn 18, but you can only take the practical test after you turn 18, e.g. on the day of your majority. The theory test for the A1 license for motorcycles up to 125 cc is similar to the B license, so it can be taken at the age of 16.
