Although Spaniards do not consume as much rice as Asian countries, their cuisine would not be the same without this product.
Spain has 7 kilograms of rice per person per year and a harvest of more than 720,000 tons.
Without a doubt, the main rice growing area in Spain is the Valencian region. It was introduced by the Muslims in 711. With plenty of wetlands along the entire coast in the provinces of Valencia, rice cultivation is heavily developed. There are also many areas for planting in the Albufera Natural Park area.
Next to this reserve is the town of Sueca, which has a population of 27,000. Sueca is known as the “Rice City of Spain” and in September there is a festival in honor of this crop, which is the backbone of the local economy. The famous Rice Festival, declared an object of tourist interest, and all residents and visitors could enjoy a wide program of entertainment and cultural events.
Sueca is the place where you can take part in an international paella tasting and competition, as well as attend a parade in honor of rice. In addition to these classic events, there are sports tournaments, live music concerts and municipal orchestras, fireworks shows, festivals, children’s games, gastronomic competitions and much more.
