The first high-speed train journey in Spain left Madrid for Seville on 21 April 1992. Since then, over the next three decades Spain has developed one of the most advanced rail networks in the world, leading in terms of network length, level of modernity, commercial speed, fleet versatility and punctuality.
Spain has shown the rest of Europe that technical interoperability between all providers is possible, with high levels of punctuality and reliability and has the longest interoperable route in Europe between Barcelona and Malaga. This line is the clearest example that interoperability is now a proven fact. On the train you can visit the capital and then the main cities on the Spanish coast: Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Malaga.
But it is not only the high-speed train network that has been developed. For example, the Renfe local train service is used daily by hundreds of Valencians. Many of their journeys are from the capital to the various towns in the province or vice versa, to go to work or to university. Valencia as the third largest city in Spain is growing more and more every year, and supposedly the prices of housing and rents are also increasing.
Many people prefer to live and rent houses or rooms in cities 20-25 min by train from Valencia in order to save money and have cheaper housing. The authorities are supporting people in this matter and in 2023 Renfe users in the Comunitat Valenciana can get free passes for Cercanías and Media Distancia.
