The emergency state in Spain will be extended for another 15 days. This Sunday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said during a video conference with regional leaders that he intends to extend the decree on the state of emergency in the country for another two weeks, until April 12. To do this, the government requires permission from the Congress of Deputies. The meeting will be held next week, March 25.
On Saturday, March 14, the Council of Ministers had already approved such measures. According to them, this is necessary to curb the continuous spread of coronavirus in Spain. It also provides for the introduction of a number of restrictions on citizens who already quarantine in their homes.
To extend the quarantine period, Congress is required to vote and the measures proposed by Pedro Sanchez are expected to be approved. It was originally intended that the state of emergency in Spain would last 15 days until March 29. However, after a week of quarantine, the number of cases of infection with the COVID-19 virus continues to grow.
Last Sunday, the head of the executive branch discussed the situation with regional leaders. Catalan leader Quim Torra refused to sign a joint statement drawn up after the meeting a week ago. This meeting was attended by four ministers on the crisis committee: Salvador Illa (Health), Margarita Robles (Defense), Fernando Grande Marlasca (Internal Affairs) and Jose Luis Abalos (Transport).
Strengthening measures
Torra argues that stricter measures and restrictions on society are needed. Especially in cities with a large number of cases of coronavirus, such as Madrid and Catalonia. This morning he reiterated this. Despite the fact that Sanchez has already taken very “radical” actions, the most serious in Europe and probably in the world, according to the government.
Today, the head of government expanded the requirements for complete self-isolation of citizens. A state of emergency has now been introduced in the Basque Country, the La Rioja region and some other autonomous regions, in addition to Madrid and Catalonia.
The head of government proposed a major state agreement in solidarity with a number of issues, including the tightening of the current situation. What is the point of encouraging people to stay home this weekend at home if they return to their companies and offices again tomorrow and become infected, he says.
Lack of supplies in hospitals
Quim Torra also criticized the distribution of supplies in hospitals and hospitals. He demanded that the executive set clear criteria for a fair distribution of resources. “100%” of the heads of regions agreed with this, according to sources.
The representative of the Autonomous Region of Galicia, Alberto Nunez Feijo, turned to Sanchez: “There is a lack of clarity and concreteness. There are many contradictions in the healthcare sector”. In particular, the question arises as to what caused such a sharp shortage of sanitary materials. Is it the lack of preparation for such an emergency or the usual “negligence”?
