Spain’s state of emergency will be extended for another 15 days. This Sunday, Spain’s head of government, Pedro Sanchez, said during a videoconference with regional leaders that he intends to extend the country’s state of emergency decree for another two weeks, until April 12. To do so, the government needs authorization from the Congress of Deputies. The meeting will be held next week, on March 25.
March 25.
On Saturday, March 14, the Council of Ministers had already approved such measures. They said this is necessary to contain the continuous spread of the coronavirus in Spain. It is also envisaged to impose some restrictions on citizens who are already quarantined in their homes.
To extend the quarantine period, Congress must hold a vote, and Pedro Sanchez’s proposed measures are expected to be approved. Initially, the state of emergency in Spain was supposed to last 15 days until March 29. However, after a week of quarantine, the number of cases of COVID-19 virus infection continues to rise.
Last Sunday, the chief executive discussed the situation with regional leaders. Catalan leader Quim Torra refused to sign a joint statement drawn up after a meeting a week ago. Today’s meeting was attended by the four ministers who make up the crisis affairs committee: Salvador Illa (Health), Margarita Robles (Defense), Fernando Grande-Marlasca (Interior) and José Luis Abalos (Transportation).

Tougher measures
Torra argues that stricter measures and restrictions on society are needed. Especially in cities with a high number of coronavirus cases, like Madrid and Catalonia. This morning he reiterated this claim. Despite the fact that Sanchez has already taken very “radical” actions, the most serious in Europe and probably in the world, according to the government.
Today, the head of government expanded the demands for total self-isolation of citizens. A state of emergency has now been imposed in the Basque Country, the La Rioja region and several other autonomous regions, in addition to Madrid and Catalonia.
The head of government has proposed a major state agreement in solidarity with a number of issues, including the tightening of the current situation. What is the point of urging people to stay at home this weekend if tomorrow they will go back to their companies and offices and be exposed to contamination, he said.

Lack of consumables in hospitals
Kuim Torra also criticized the distribution of consumables in hospitals and hospitals. He demanded that the executive set clear criteria for fair distribution of resources. “100%” of the regional heads agreed with this, according to sources.
The representative of the autonomous region of Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, addressed Sánchez: “We lack clarity and concreteness. There are many contradictions in the health sector.” In particular, there is the question of what has caused such a drastic shortage of sanitary materials. Is it a lack of preparation for such an emergency situation or just plain “negligence”?”
What is the reason?
